Using CloudKick With Rackspace Cloud Servers – Webinar

Last week I co-hosted a great webinar with Alex Polvi (@polvi), one of the founders of CloudKick. It was a great session and I wanted to share it with everyone as it really displays the power and flexibility of leveraging Cloud hosting platforms as well as what can be done with the APIs that providers offer for their systems.

During the webinar Alex not only talks about the capabilities of CloudKick but he demonstrates them live on the Rackspace Cloud Servers platform. It is easy to see the value in their tool and it opens up tons of new possibilities for monitoring, automation and more. Our attendees asked a lot of great questions at the end as well. I’ll stop talking now so you can get to the recording, enjoy!

New Server & New Theme – Again

Just a few weeks ago the Rackspace Cloud team launched Cloud Servers infrastructure in the new Chicago data center. What does that mean to me? Time to try it out, that is what it means! I’ve provisioned a new 1 GB Cloud Server in the Chicago DC and I’m loving the speed. I also took this opportunity to switch back to Debian from Ubuntu and set up up a new server monitoring tool called Server Density which rocks.

Right as I was about to migrate, one of my favorite theme developers for WordPress released a brand new theme which I fell instantly in love with. So everyone who reads my blog, meet Traction from the Theme Foundry. I hope everyone likes it and if you have any thoughts please leave me a comment.

Site Migrated & New Theme

So I’ve decided that in order to keep my command line skills sharp and to continue learning even more, I needed to move my main site(s) over to a Cloud Server where I manage the entire LAMP stack directly. After some headaches with WordPress I’ve completed the migration and things are up and running smoothly — and fast! I took this opportunity to start with a clean WordPress install as well since this site was started on a very old version. I reinstalled all of my plugins, dropped a few, make a few other tweaks and then simply imported all my posts and comments instead of a database restore. What most people will probably notice is the new theme, or lack thereof. I sometimes prefer the minimalist approach and I found a great theme framework that I like, just the way it is. I still have a few tweaks to make but I’m almost there.

I’d appreciate some feedback on the new look/feel and any suggestions are always welcome!

Optimizing Your WordPress Site

My colleague wrote an excellent article the other week on making your web sites load faster by leveraging the Rackspace Cloud Files & CDN platform to serve all static content on your site. I want to take this a step further for those of you who leverage the WordPress platform which is one of the most popular open-source web applications in existence.

In the WordPress community there are countless plugins that can be used for optimization, so how do you know which ones to use? Well I’m about to tell you and save you many hours or days of searching and experimenting.
