[VIDEO] Rackspace Cloud iPhone App For Cloud Servers & Files

If you use Cloud Servers or Cloud Files from the Rackspace Cloud and have an iPhone you definitely need to download the iPhone application for these platforms. It offers a very powerful set of features and options to manage your account including adding new servers, resizing existing servers, rebooting, SSH access, resource monitoring for Cloud Servers and for Cloud Files you can easily list all of your containers and drill down on the content inside, preview content and even email an HTTP url or the file itself directly from your iPhone.

Check out this brief live demonstration I created:

Installing WordPress On Cloud Sites + CDN Support

WordPress is probably the most popular web application we encounter running on Cloud Sites at the Rackspace Cloud and arguably one of the most widely used web apps across the board. I’ve put together a 12 minute video walking you through the installation, setup and configuration process for WordPress on Cloud Sites. I also show the steps for easily enabling clean URLs and uploading the famous CDN Tools WordPress plugin which automatically side loads all of your static content to Cloud Files and serves it over the Limelight CDN, all behind the scenes.

Introduction To Cloud Servers

If you have looked at hosting in the Cloud, whether in part or whole you may have run into some limitations. This is because many platform-as-a-service (PaaS) Clouds offer little to no control over the back-end environment. This can be a good thing for many users in terms of easier management and time savings, but what if you need to run a service or app that does not fit into a pre-defined environment?

This is where infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platforms come into play like Cloud Servers from the Rackspace Cloud. With the Cloud Servers platform you have the ability to rapidly provision dedicated virtual server instances with truly protected and dedicated resources on a very granular level. The platform allows for full control over the environment just like a dedicated server would, but because you are able to get much more specific in regards to the resources needed at that time, the cost can be significantly less. In addition, you can provision these resources in a matter of minutes and even resize a Cloud Server instance on-the-fly to increase your memory, cpu allocation and disk space all without having to reconfigure the environment or migrate your data. This IS Cloud.

There are many other benefits to platforms such as Cloud Servers, such as the ability to pay for your instances on a per hour basis. This allows a customer to be extremely flexible and provision as many resources as they need (a few large or maybe hundreds of small instances) and instantly delete them and stop paying when they are done. Try doing that with dedicated hardware! No contracts, minimums or commitment terms.

I’ve created a short video demo using the Rackspace Cloud Servers platform to show you just how easy you can get up and running in the Cloud. This demo only focuses on using the control panel interface, but there is also a robust open API for Cloud Servers to programmatically interface with the back-end systems for even greater flexibility and automation.

Rackspace / Mosso Cloud Servers Demo

A few days ago I posted a video demo/tutorial showing how to get started with Rackspace Cloud Files & the Limelight CDN component to that platform. I have another tutorial complete showing off the new Cloud Servers platform and how easy and quick you can deploy new virtual dedicated server instances and manage those servers. This is an amazing platform with significant advantages to running in a traditional dedicated environment and it also has many benefits in comparison to other clouds in terms of usability, reliability and cost.
