A 40,000 Foot Update

Sitting here cruising at about 40,000 feet heading home and felt the urge to post a little note to the old blog which hasn’t seen much action as of late.

To say the last year has been busy would be an understatement. It has certainly been exciting but boy does time fly when you are building things and having fun. Since last October I’ve:

  • Left my awesome gig at Rackspace
  • Had a baby…well my wife did technically speaking (all natural I might add)
  • Joined a great team at HP doing some big things in Cloud
  • Left HP to do even bigger things in Cloud with another amazing team in Portland (focused on PaaS)
  • Decided to move cross-country to join my new team

For those who don’t know me I’ve traveled quite a bit but I’ve never actually lived outside of about a 2 mile radius in San Antonio so this is big. Luckily my wife and I have a few months to prep before moving which helps. It looks like this pace is going to continue for a few more years yet. I’m extremely excited about what the future holds. I’ll be making another post with details about my new job soon.

For readers who come to this blog for my articles relating to cloud, hosting platforms, etc you will want to stay tuned!

You Are What You Tweet (@ckeck)

I was really excited to see that Visual.ly finally went GA just the other week for all your infographic needs. As part of their launch they built this really neat Twitter persona visualizer of sorts. Something you definitely need to check out (see mine below).

Update: At first there seemed to be some mistake in who it thought I was. Under ‘likely obsession’ it had me holding a pack of cigarettes. That’ll be the day — anyone who knows me would realize how funny that is. Interestingly enough it appears as though the infographic below auto updated to correct itself so I’m assuming it will keep up with my data flow over time and adjust accordingly…cool!

Moving On In The Cloud

After 4 1/2 amazing years the time has come to move on and say goodbye to Rackspace and the many friends I’ve made along the way. Let me state for the record that this was the hardest career decision I’ve ever had to make, and one of the hardest life decisions in general, but in the end I feel I made the right choice for my career and for my family. Being a part of such a great company and working with such incredible people will have a lasting impact and I do consider myself extremely lucky to have been part of building Mosso and the Rackspace Cloud.

For many, being on the forefront of an emerging technology such as Cloud Computing and helping to build one of the most successful businesses in the market is a rare opportunity. I’m going to get to do it twice now (see below). My leaving Rackspace is not due to any issues within the company, I simply had an offer that I could not refuse. I would highly recommend Rackspace as a place to work.

Quake 2 – I’ve Still Got It

KnuckleSangwich Wins - Quake 2The other day I had some (rare) free time on my hands so I decided I’d have some fun and do a bit of gaming on my new 27″ iMac to break it in a bit. After a bit of internal debate I realized that I haven’t played any Quake 2 in quite some time, one of my all time favorites. Most of the players these days however are die hard fans/addicts and are really good, so I wasn’t expecting much in terms of ranking, just thought I’d have a bit of fun while breaking myself in once more.

Well I must say that I impressed myself. I was playing with a really good group of players and by only the second map in the maprotate list I had already dominated the competition doubling the player in second place! Screenshot attached for reference (I know someone out there will want proof). So if you are an avid Quake 2 player keep your eyes open for KnuckleSangwich which is my “handle”.

My Favorite Cartoons Growing Up

While watching cartoons with my step-daugther this weekend I got to thinking about all of my favorite cartoons I watched as a kid. Most of these are from the mid-late 80’s, back when cartoons were actually good. I’m not sure what happened, but the cartoons these days just don’t seem engaging at all and the CG animation is so hard to watch. Can’t animators draw anymore?

Anyhow, I found a few of the intro scenes from my top picks which you can check out below. They are in no specific order of preference, except for Robotech which I was probably my favorite. Flashback time!
